Jeffrey S. Fischgrund, MD, Named New Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
Rosemont, IL
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons announces the appointment of Jeffery S. Fischgrund, MD, as the new Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS). Dr. Fischgrund is currently a practicing orthopaedic spine surgeon at the William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan, and was the Journal’s deputy editor for spine content since 2007. “I am excited, honored, and looking forward to taking over the reins of the Academy’s premiere clinical journal,” said Dr. Fischgrund.
A graduate of George Washington School of Medicine, in Washington, D.C., Dr. Fischgrund completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, and spine surgery fellowship at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.
“Dr. Fischgrund’s appointment was the successful culmination of an extensive search by the Academy to fill this very important position,” said Alan M. Levine, MD, Chair of the AAOS Council on Education. “His professional qualifications and involvement with the Academy prior to this appointment were very impressive.” Dr. Fischgrund served as editor-in-chief of Orthopaedic Knowledge Update 9 (OKU 9) and editor of the AAOS monograph on neck pain. He also served on the editorial board of the AAOS Bulletin, now known as AAOS Now, the Academy’s monthly news publication, and the AAOS Publications Committee.
As the author of numerous scientific articles and textbook chapters on spine surgery, Dr. Fischgrund has lectured extensively on the subjects of spine trauma and reconstructive spinal surgery. He is a leading researcher on bone morphogenic proteins (BMPs) and cervical disc replacements. Dr. Fischgrund also instructs medical students, orthopaedic residents, and spine fellows at William Beaumont Hospital.
He is a member of the Cervical Spine Research Society and North American Spine Society, where he chaired and served on numerous committees. “JAAOS is now recognized as ‘the source’ for orthopaedic review,” noted Dr. Fischgrund. “As an official Academy journal, the success of JAAOS continues to highlight the educational commitment of the Academy to all its members.”
