B Sonny Bal, MD
Columbia, MO

Dr. Sonny Bal was in private group practice for four years, and now works as an academic total joint surgeon at the University of Missouri. He earned an MBA degree from Northwestern University during private practice. This education was motivated by observing how the profession of orthopaedics functions in a complex business environment. Recently Dr. Bal enrolled in part-time law school after realizing that orthopaedic surgeons also function in a complex legal environment.

Dr. Bal is the editor-in-chief of the Orthopaedic Medical Legal Advisor, a quarterly bulletin that tackles the difficult intersection between medicine and law. He also serves as vice-chair of the Legal Committee of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and will assume the position of chair in 2007. Dr. Bal gained additional valuable experience during his tenure on the AAOS Academic Business Practice Management Committee. Last year he visited legislators in Washington D.C. with his patients to lobby for increased funding of musculoskeletal research on behalf of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

In addition, Dr. Bal developed www.hipandknee.com, a Web site for patient education and information relating to total joint surgery.
