Lisa K. Cannada is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon with an extensive background in teaching and orthopaedic trauma surgery. She completed her medical school at University of Maryland in 1996 and entered her residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland. She came back to Maryland for her trauma fellowship at the RA Cowley Shock Trauma Center. She worked at Grady Hospital in Atlanta for 3 years before accepting a position at the University of Texas-Southwestern. She truly loves her career as an orthopaedic trauma surgeon and is a strong advocate for Women in Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Cannada lectures nationally on trauma topics and her research. Her research includes use of bone morphogenetic proteins, limb salvage, outcomes after trauma, multiple studies dealing with retrograde intramedullary nailing, open pelvic fractures and childbirth after pregnancy. She is a tireless teacher and advocate for women and young students to fellows interested in orthopaedic surgery careers. She is faculty advisor for the Women in Surgery and Orthopaedic Interest Groups and teaches the third year medical students their orthopaedic surgery module. In addition, she founded the Annual Women in Trauma Breakfast held at the OTA meeting and began a forum for young practioners at the OTA (which is now a symposium). Dr. Cannada is quite active nationally, being selected to the Leadership Fellows Program in 2007. She is editor of the OTA newsletter and Chairman of the Fellowship Committee. She is on the Board of Directors of the RJOS and Mentor Committee Chair. In addition, she is co-editor for a handbook for Women in Orthopaedics.
