James D Kelly, II MD
San Francisco, CA

I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on July 30, 1963.

I attended college at the University of Rochester, studying chemical engineering. I completed my medical degree at Vanderbilt University in 1989.

After completing an internship in general surgery at Oakland Naval Hospital, I completed my flight surgery training in the United States Navy and served as a flight surgeon for two United States Marine Corps Squadrons, the first in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii and the second, in El Toro, California.

I completed my residency at the University of Missouri, Kansas City in 1999.

I completed a fellowship in upper extremity surgery with Tom R. Norris, M.D. and H. Relton McCarroll, M.D. in 2000.

After 5 years of private practice at the Orthopedic Group of San Francisco, I joined my mentors, Dr. McCarroll and Dr. Norris in practice at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco.

Our private practice trains two orthopedic surgeons in surgery of the upper extremity per year. My specialty is surgery of the shoulder and elbow. While I have a practice comprehensive in shoulder and elbow, including arthroscopy, rotator cuff disorders and sports, my research interest is in shoulder arthroplasty. My research interest is focused on the reverse total shoulder replacement.

I am married with two young boys, aged 1 and 4. My hobbies are road cycling, skiing, windsurfing, and mountain biking. I am also a commercially rated multi-engine instrument pilot.

I am currently the secretary of the Northern California Chapter of the Western Orthopedic Association, as well as the program chairman for this chapter’s meeting in November 2007. I am a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, California Orthopedic Association, California Medical Association, San Francisco Medical Society, and the Western Orthopedic Association.
