Shepard R Hurwitz, MD
Chapel Hill, NC

I entered orthopaedic training at Columbia University in 1978 after two years of surgical training at the University of Virginia. I gravitated toward foot and ankle problems, including gait biomechanics. Another interest of mine was bone repair and remodeling. My post-doctoral fellowships were both at Cornell University-Hospital for Special Surgery and my first real job was in private practice in Washington DC. I switched to a full time faculty position at Geroge Washington University in 1984 and then moved to the University of Rochester in 1989 then to the University of Virginia in 1994. Currently, I am division chief for Foot/Ankle, Medical Director of outpatient orthopedic services and residency director at the University of Virginia. In 3 months I will be moving to North Carolina to work in the orthopaedic department in Chapel Hill and in February 2008 will assume the role of Executive Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. I am a member of AAOS, AOA, ORS, AOFAS, OTA, AMA and my state orthopaedic and medical society.
