Jay D Mabrey, MD Dallas, TX
Dr. Jay D. Mabrey is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). He completed his undergraduate studies at Cornell University, graduating cum laude in 1977. He continued his medical studies at Weill Cornell University Medical College, graduating in 1981, where he received the Thompson Award for outstanding achievement by a medical student in orthopaedics. He completed a six-year residency in orthopaedic surgery at Duke University Medical Center in 1987 and then served six years of active duty with the U.S. Army Medical Corps as an orthopaedic surgeon at the rank of Major. While in the Army, his orthopaedic service was responsible for the 24th Infantry Division and the 1st of the 75th Ranger Battalion. He also served as a consultant to the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center. In 1990, while still in the Army, he completed a fellowship at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, studying biomechanics, total joint replacement and gait analysis.
Upon finishing his military tour at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, he joined the faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where he directed the Total Joint Service and rose to the rank of professor. In addition, he served as chief of orthopaedics at the Audie Murphy VA Medical Center.
In 2004, he became the chief of orthopaedics at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, and continues to serve in that capacity. At Baylor he has a busy adult reconstruction practice focusing on total hip and total knee replacements as well as hip arthroscopy. He also serves as the medical director of the Baylor Motion & Sports Performance Center, a state of the art gait analysis laboratory. The Center is actively involved with USA Track & Field in analyzing the performance of their elite middle and long distance runners in preparation for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Dr. Mabrey has authored 11 book chapters and 35 peer-reviewed articles on a variety of topics. He has served as the chair of the AAOS Task Force on Virtual Reality for the past 10 years. That task force will introduce the first fully functional and hyper-realistic surgical simulator for knee arthroscopy in 2007. He is currently at work with the U.S. Army to develop a simulator for compartment syndrome.
Dr. Mabrey is also the current chairman of the FDA Panel for Orthopaedic Devices. He belongs to several orthopaedic and medical organizations including The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, The Orthopaedic Research Society, The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (currently serving as the Chair of the Communications Committee), The Texas Orthopaedic Association (serving on the Board of Directors), The American Medical Association, The Arthritis Foundation (serving on the Board of the North Texas Chapter).
