Thomas M DeBerardino, MD Avon, CT
I graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1985 with a B.S. degree, and then went on to complete Medical School in 1989 via a Health Professions Scholarship at New York Medical College. I completed a transitional internship at Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC) in 1990 and returned to be the Medical Director for the Army's Watervliet Arsenal in Watervliet, NY while waiting for my orthopaedic residency to start in 1991. My orthopaedic residency was completed at TAMC in 1995. I went on to complete the two year John A. Feagin , Jr. Sports Medicine Fellowship in 1997. The first year was a basic science research year hosted at the Army's prestigious Institute for Surgical Research at Fort Sam Houston, TX. The second clinical year was completed at Keller Army Hospital, West Point, NY. I immediately returned to San Antonio, TX to become the Research Director for the basic science year of our Feagin Sports Medicine Fellowship. In 2001, I moved back to West Point to join the Fellowship staff at Keller Army Hospital and became the fourth Director for our Feagin Sports Medicine Fellowship in April 2005. In 2002, I was selected as one of three AOSSM-ESSKA European Traveling Fellows as we traveled throughout Europe visiting various major sports medicine centers. I remain very active with the traveling fellowship program having served twice as a local host for the European traveling fellows that have been selected to visit sports medicine centers in the United States. I am also an alumni of the AAOS Leadership Fellows Program (Class of 2005). I currently also serve on the AAOS Public Relations Oversight Group (PROG). Via the AOSSM, I serve on both the Enduring Education Committee and the Self Assessment/Education Committees. I am currently on active duty as a Colonel in the United States Army Medical Corps. I have 22 years of active service and will retire in 2009 after 24 years on active duty. I served one tour of duty during the current Operation Iraqi Freedom conflict from May to October 2003.
